Those Were the Days on WRCO Saturday night will celebrate the holiday season with a Solid Gold Dancer Christmas party. I will be spinning a few classic rock holiday tunes along with all of the music we normally play from the fifties through the early nineties. Saturday will be the first official day of winter, and I may play some of your favorite summer hits. Radio is a ‘theater of the mind’ and warm sunny thoughts might do us all some good.
When the classic tunes play, I go back to my days growing up and the visits to the big town of Richland Center. Mom would take me for my Santa visit in the little house across from Farmers and Merchants bank. I would shop for dad at Keegan Implement and buy him a heartfelt gift such as a draw pin. The latest Ronco gadget gift would be purchased for my dear mother (Veg-o-matic, Whip-o-matic, Pocket Fisherman, Bottle and Glass Cutter, etc.) at the Discount House. For my sister I would buy a record album featuring an artist I liked. That way I could borrow the record and accidentally leave it in my record rack. Some of the most favorite gifts that I received over the years include a Billy Blastoff Doll, a basketball with Lou Alcindor’s (Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s) name on it, any record album, a Daisy BB gun (I did not shoot my eye out), a Mr. Microphone, Pong TV Tennis game, and my Hot Wheels cars and Super Charger set.
Perhaps when you check in with Those Were the Days this Saturday night, you can share a Christmas toy story or special memory? That is your assignment for this weekend. Those Were the Days can be heard on WRCO FM 100.9, WRCO.com., and on the Civic Media app. between six and midnight Saturday night. I hope to hear from you. Kudos to our caller from California that checked in last weekend! It is always great to make new friends (but keep the old).
