In the spring of 1982, I was outstanding in right field for the Ithaca Bulldogs. I did not usually stand for very long as the ball often was flying over my head or bouncing under my glove. While the hits were flying over my head, there were many hits flying around in my head. Some of my faves that spring included: Centerfold-J.Geils Band, Shake It Up-Cars, Take Off-Bob and Doug McKenzie, I Love Rock n' Roll-Joan Jett, We Got The Beat-Go-Go's, (Oh) Pretty Woman-Van Halen, Do You Believe In Love-Huey Lewis and the News, Spirits In the Material World-Police, Don't Let Him Know-Prism, Fantasy-Aldo Nova, and My Girl-Donnie Iris. All of these songs made for good mix tapes for my friends. I would buy as many 45 r.p.m. records that I could afford, and try to tape the rest off the radio. Editing out the d.j.'s voice was the toughest part. Affording blank cassette tapes was also a problem. You could buy 3 blanks for a dollar, however, those tapes might not last past the first play. You had to at least find a tape that had its own case.
This Saturday night on WRCO FM 100.9 and wrco.com, I will be spinning some of those smash hits from this weekend in 1982. Please give me a call between six and midnight if you would like to hear a favorite from the fifties through the eighties during Those Were The Days radio show. You could be the owner of some cool stuff if you are one of our trivia winners. You can be one of the cool kids if you listen to Those Were The Days this Saturday night.
