In the fall of 1970, I was a big strapping first grader at Loyd elementary school. Mrs. Peckham tried to teach me and unfortunately, she knew my parents. They would get a parent/teacher conference every once in a while, during Friday night fish, and it was not good for little Phil. I have many memories of that year. Our first-grade reader was called, Seven is Magic. My first-grade crush was on a young lady named Betty. While trying to learn to ride my bike that year, I got daring and took one training wheel off. This was a risky move, and I lost my balance and landed face first in the gravel. It took a while for my face scab to form. I am sure that Betty was not impressed. The very first video recorder that Ithaca schools owned debuted that year. It was a reel-to-reel machine that featured black and white images. You could almost see figures running through the blur at the football games. It was a great time for music. While riding the bus we would hear many awesome songs including All Right Now-Free, I’ll Be There-Jackson Five, Green Eyed Lady-Sugarloaf, Lookin Out My Back Door-CCR, Our House-Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Lola-Kinks, I Think I Love You-Partridge Family, Share the Land-Guess Who, and Out in the Country-Three Dog Night.
I hope you will join me for a trip back to 1970 during Those Were the Days on WRCO FM 100.9, WRCO.com and the Civic Media app. Between six and midnight we will be taking your requests for all of the best fifties through the early ninety’s vinyl, and you can play along with our trivia games. Let’s let our hair down (if we still have it) on Saturday night. I can’t wait to take those old records off the shelf.
