Social Media threat to Platteville School District being investigated
PLATTEVILLE, WIS. (WRCO / WRCE) The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a threat that was reported Sunday evening involving a student at the Platteville School District who received the message on the social media app, Telegram.
The student involved initially reported the threat to the Platteville School District, who then contacted the Platteville Police Department. After some initial investigation by the Platteville Police Department, it was determined that the student who received the threat lived outside the city limits, so the matter was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office. Out of an abundance of caution, the Platteville School District decided to cancel classes on Monday.
Additional investigation revealed the threat was not credible. The investigation showed that the student was being extorted by an individual via the social media app. The investigation into the extortion is ongoing.
There was never an actual bomb threat toward the school or any other location.
