MADISON, Wis (CIVIC MEDIA) – Today, June 24, is the third anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s controversial decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the constitutional right to abortion. Wisconsin leaders across the state have shared their thoughts as they reflect on the ruling.

Senator Tammy Baldwin, who led the Democratic caucus in introducing the Women’s Health Protection Act of 2025, emphatically condemns the decision to repeal Roe v. Wade, and reaffirms her commitment to restore the national right to abortion.

First, Donald Trump and Republicans overturned Roe v Wade. Now, they are continuing their crusade for a national abortion ban, stripping away a woman’s right to choose and control her body, healthcare, and future. Republicans continue to show that they will stop at nothing in their pursuit to stop a woman from having the right to choose. “In Wisconsin, we’ve seen how these attacks on women’s reproductive rights and freedoms have hurt our neighbors, friends, and families – and we won’t stand for it. The Women’s Health Protection Act is a necessary step to restore Americans’ constitutional right to choose what’s best for their families, stop Congressional and state-level Republicans from further putting themselves between a doctor and a woman, and once and for all, give women their rights and freedoms back.

Wisconsin’s Democratic Representatives echoed Senator Baldwin’s frustration with the current administration, while speaking in favor of the proposed bill.

2nd District Democratic Representative Mark Pocan:

4th District Democratic Representative Gwen Moore:

Republican officials’ comments starkly contrast their counterparts across the aisle, issuing their praise for the ruling. While Wisconsin GOP leaders had not remarked on the anniversary, they had made statements when the decision was initially made.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson previously called it the “correct decision.” 3rd District Representative Derrick Van Orden claimed it was a “major milestone”:

7th District Representative Thomas Tiffany in a news release called it a “historic victory.”

Roe v. Wade was a landmark 1973 legal ruling in which the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated a Texas statute banning abortion. The court ruled that a woman’s right to her body was protected by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Nearly 50 years later, on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in a 6-3 vote.
