GREEN BAY, WI–(WGBW&WISS)–The Green Bay Area Public School (GBAPS) District will vote during a special board meeting on Monday to enter negotiations with Interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer. They want to continue her contract through the 2025/26 school year.

“The Board of Education has been incredibly fortunate to have a strong leader in Vicki Bayer who has led the District as interim superintendent through the return to in-person learning during the pandemic, a significant budget deficit, boundary changes and school consolidations, and two referendums,” stated Board President Laura McCoy “The Board is grateful to Ms. Bayer for her willingness to serve as superintendent for an additional year, while the Board of Education and District administration complete important ongoing efforts.”

The GBAPS District said in a press release that extending the contract through next school year will provide stability the district will need for the following projects:

  • Develop a strategic plan that will provide a roadmap and measurable goals for the district for the next 3-5 years.
  • Professional development to support the implementation of a new curriculum.
  • Completing the 2022 and 2024 referendum projects to provide engaging and appropriate learning spaces for students.
  • Finalizing school consolidations.

The Board of Education will vote on a contract for the 2025/26 school year at the November 25, 2024 meeting. They will begin the process of hiring a new superintendent in the fall of 2025.

The school board began the process of revamping the job description of the Superintendent following the resignation of Dr. Claude Tiller in February. Tiller resigned following controversy over statements he made while appearing as a guest on an Atlanta radio show. Bayer was named Interim Superintendent while the board searches for its 3rd superintendent in 5 years. The job opening has yet to be advertised by the school board.
