During Those Were the Days on WRCO Saturday night, I will be springing back to 1976. You will be able to hear the Top 30 songs and other pop culture notes from all of those years ago. Back then we were gearing up for our country’s bicentennial. Mailboxes and fire hydrants were painted red, white, and blue as everyone was gearing up for July 4th. My social life revolved around pedalling my Hiawatha three speed bike. It had a simulated leather tote bag behind the seat and a radio with lights, blinker, and horn on the handlebar. There were neighbor girls no matter which direction I rode. We were all friends. Once in a while, Renee, Lisa, Lisa, Lori, Laurie, Jennifer, and Helen would all meet up with our bikes. I am sure they were impressed by my sweet ride. When my AM bike radio was not under a high line wire or an electric fencer, songs that were playing included, Strange Magic-ELO, Let Your Love Flow-Bellamy Brothers, Shout It Out Loud-Kiss, Right Back Where We Started From-Maxine Nightingale, Show Me the Way-Peter Frampton, and Welcome Back-John Sebastion. Favorite TV shows of me and the neighbor girls included Welcome Back Kotter, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Rhoda, Good Times, The Waltons, Carol Burnett Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Bob Newhart. It will be a blast Saturday night when we go back and relive those Kodachrome days.
During the first hour of Those Were the Days, I will have a guest disc jockey. His daughter won the top bid at a recent benefit auction, and she gifted it to her dear old dad. The opportunity to program a portion of the show Saturday night will belong to Dave Unbehaun. His playlist is right up my alley. It could get wild when two old farm boys get together to party! We will feature his hits during the first hour so that he can go home and take a nap. You will have to tune in to this week’s best of the fifties through the early nineties program to find out more. We will not be taking requests this week or playing trivia. Those features will return next Saturday night when we welcome a special guest who made a lot of great music in the 1980’s. Thanks for reading and listening all of these years.
