Haying and Playing ’74
August 1, 2024 8:34 AM CDT
I did more playing than haying in 1974. My allowance was 25 cents for every load of hay I helped with. Three loads would net me enough for a 45 record. Sometimes I would than check out to the shade while the rest of the family and helpers finished the rest of the day. I was almost 11 years old, and it was that summer when I had my first crush. It wasn’t just orange and grape Crush! A young lady came to visit the old family farm. She was 3 years older, and she played guitar and sang. I would try to sing with her. When I hear the radio hits from ’74, I am right back to that time. The song ‘The Air That I Breathe by the Hollies reminds me of the young woman I was crushing on fifty years ago!!!
This Saturday night on WRCO, I will be picking my Top seventy-four from ’74. Many of these songs were originally purchased with my hard-earned hay making money. Music from the likes of BTO, Elton John, Wings, Three Dog Night, Bad Company, Grand Funk, Gordon Lightfoot, Eagles, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and ABBA will be featured during our six-hour Shindig this Saturday night between six and midnight. I will be attending a wedding this weekend and as a result, the request line will be shut down. We will resume that feature next week following Green Bay football on WRCO 100.9 FM, WRCO.com, and the Civic Media app.
