Wrestlers see success on mats

The Wisconsin Rapids and Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards teams competed in a pair of holiday tournaments in Eau Claire and La Crosse over December 27 and 28.

The Raiders competed in the Eau Claire Holiday Duals at UWEC.

Rapids went 5-0 on the day including a win over Simley, MN, in the title match.

Deegan Armagost (120), Landyn Freeman (126), Mason Tritz (157-160), and Tanner Gormanson (285) all went undefeated on the day with five wins.

The Papermakers competed in the Bi-State Classic and had five athletes reach the podium.

Sophomore, Gavin Tritz, was the lone medalist for the boys as he placed ninth at 144-pounds, while the girls had four medalists.

Rylan Oleson (100) placed sixth with Amiya Leverance (114), MaKayla McGuffey (165), and Lexie Stofflet (235) were all fourth.

Assumption, Rapids Boys Hoops and Hockey all drop holiday tourney games

It was a tough three days for the Wisconsin Rapids and Assumption Boys Basketball teams as they both dropped a pair of games at their respective tournaments.

The Raiders dropped games to DeForest and Reedsburg Area (59-57) at Just-A-Game Fieldhouse in the Wisconsin Dells, while the Royals were upended by Amherst (59-46) and Bonduel (55-29) at the 53rd annual Sentry Classic at UWSP.

Rapids Hockey competed in the Dells Holiday Tournament where they placed sixth with losses to Tomah/Sparta and Fond du Lac, but beat Onalaska/La Crosse.

Riverkings return home

After a weekend off, the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings will be back on the ice over January 3 and 4 when they host the Steele County Blades with puck drops at 7:00 p.m. both nights.

The Riverkings currently sit as the No. 1 team in the USPHL North Division with 44 points, and have won six consecutive games.

Rapids have defeated the Blades twice this season with scores of 5-2 and 5-3 on November 1 and 2 of 2024.
