The Medicare open enrollment period is currently being held through Saturday, December 7. It allows beneficiaries to evaluate, and make changes to, their Medicare plan. Also during this time scammers like to target the beneficiaries. Michelle Reinen (rye-nun) is with The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).
Medicare scammers are not only active during the open enrollment period, but also annually. There are various scams seniors, and caretakers, should be aware of.
If you are contacted by Medicare, and are unsure if the agent is legitimate, hang up and call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). Reinen says that Medicare is not the only agency that will not try calling you, unless you call first.
To report government agency scammers you can contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline by phone at 1-800-422-7128, by email at DATCP Hotline at wi dot gov or go to their website at datcp dot wi dot gov. Also you can learn more about Medicare, and specific plans, at medicare dot gov.
