LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLCX) – The School District of La Crosse has sold Lincoln Middle School.

Commonwealth Development Corporation of America and the Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development bought the school for $2.2 million and will close on the sale next summer, on June 30, 2025.

When the building went up for sale in 2021, the district sought proposals that would “reflect priorities identified by the community.”

“We are excited to transition the property to a developer who is able to meet our community’s interests and needs through the development of affordable housing in a way that thoughtfully preserves the character of a historic building in the neighborhood,” Dr. Aaron Angel, Superintendent, said. “It signifies a positive step towards meeting the housing needs of our residents and contributing to the overall well-being and vitality of our community.”

Construction to convert the school into housing is scheduled to begin in 2026, pending the award of a grant from WHEDA. The development aims to provide affordable housing. Part of the proposal included a requirement to maintain the historic status of the 101-year-old building.

Lincoln Middle School is 91,884 square feet and sits on 2.1 acres at 510 9th Street South. The school, which was closed in August 2023, was originally built in 1923.
