Area Schools Calendar Changes

Due to the number of weather related cancellations this year, area schools have made adjustments to meet the state's requirements for hours of instruction.

Effective Monday, February 18th, modifications are in place in the Hillsboro School District. The school day now begins with the first bell for Middle/High School students at 7:55 AM and first hour beginning at 8:00. The Middle/High School day will end at 3:36 PM. The elementary school day starts at the usual time, but students are dismissed five minutes later. Beginning February 22nd, Fridays will be full days for students. Also, June 5, 6, and 7 are now regular school days. Additional, possible make-up days are: April 18, March 25 and April 22. These will be announced if needed.

The Riverdale School District has announced that the early release days scheduled for Wednesday, February 27, and March 13, have been canceled. Parent/Teacher conferences scheduled for March 13th will still be held, but will not start until 3:30 PM.

In the Kickapoo School District, the board approved snow make-up days. School will be extended into June and make up days will be June 3rd through 8th. There will also be school on March 8th, and the early release scheduled for April 10th will be a full student day. Additional minutes to the school day may also be added in the future. Some dates have also been changed in the Kickapoo District. The third quarter will now end April 3rd and not March 22nd, and the date for prom has been changed from April 6th to May 11th.

Instructional time was added to the calendar for students in the Richland School District at the February 18th School board meeting. District Administrator, Jarred Burke, presented a recommendation by the administrative team to make up time missed due to weather cancellations and delays. The district had already added ten minutes to the school day to make up time missed due to flooding in September. The district is now forced to make up time due to the extreme winter weather conditions experienced. It is the consensus of the administrative team to keep the calendar as intact as possible. At the February 18th meeting the board approved changing Friday, March 1st, from a full in-service day to a full instructional day; and Friday, May 10th, and Thursday, June 6th, from an early release and in-service day to a full instructional day. While this will make up for missed time, Burke noted that the district will still need to work on the schedule to make up for a partial day due to a late start last week. More changes will also have to be made if any more time is missed.

A reminder also goes out to all parents and students in the Ithaca School District. Starting Monday, February 25th, middle school and high school students will be expected to be in class at 7:55 and will be released at 3:25. Elementary students will be in the Commons for a 3:20 pick up time. The morning bus routes will not change. The afternoon routes will be approximately 15 minutes later than they had been.
