2016 River Valley Schools Preview

The first day of school in the River Valley School District will be September 1st, but a host of activities will take place in district buildings starting this week.

In an effort to help local families get ready for the new year, WRCO News continues its back-to-school preview series with leaders from our immediate local schools, starting with the River Valley Blackhawks. Open house/Back-to-School nights will begin this Wednesday (Aug. 24) evening at the River Valley Middle School. The building will be open starting at 4:00 PM for 6th grade families only. Students and parents are invited to come and get familiar with the staff and classrooms. Then at 6:45 Wednesday night will be a parents meeting for 6th grade students. That will be followed by a 7th & 8th grade parents meeting at 7:00 PM. Other upcoming open houses in the River Valley School District include Lone Rock Elementary this Thursday (Aug. 25) night from 5:00 until 6:30 PM; Spring Green Elementary next Monday (Aug. 29) from 6:00 until 7:00 PM; and next Tuesday (Aug. 30) night at both Arena Elementary and Plain Elementary – Arena from 5:30 until 7:00 PM; and Plain from 5:00 to 6:30 PM.

The first day of the 2016-17 school year will be special for incoming freshmen at the high school. Known as Step-up Day, leader students share ideas on everything from academic habits to social activities to help make their high school career a positive experience.

One of the long running events that involve all students and families in the River Valley School District is the school fair. River Valley Schools District Administrator Tom Wermuth says the fair committee as well as FFA and Ag students have already been working on the details. Those preparing for this year's fair will have a little more time to get ready as the fair date for this year is a bit later than normal, Friday, October 7th.

Just as opportunities continue to grow through the River Valley School District, the River Valley School Foundation continues to grow as well. There is currently a challenge grant being held. A River Valley Alumnus has pledged up to $50,000 dollars to the foundation through a matching challenge. The challenge grant will run through the end of the upcoming school year. Foundation dollars offer teachers the availability to offer unique opportunities to students not available through the regular budget.

While students and staff are enjoying the final days of summer vacation and preparing for positive experiences during the upcoming school year, the River Valley School District and board of education would like to remind all residents of the River Valley District of the annual meeting which will be held on Thursday, October 27th, at 7:00 PM in the Little Theater.
