2016 Fall Election Candidates
Primaries are set for four Wisconsin Senate seats after the deadline to file nomination papers.
Milwaukee Democrat Lena Taylor faces an August 9th challenge against Assembly Democrat Mandela Barnes. Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling of La Crosse goes against fellow Democrat Jared Landry of LaFarge while Republican Dan Kapanke has a primary against John Sarnowski of Onalaska. Primaries are also set in two Senate districts where incumbents are stepping down, as three Democrats filed for the seat given up by Milwaukee Democrat Nikiya Harris, and both parties have primaries for the post held by Fond du Lac Republican Rick Gudex. GOP Senate President Mary Lazich is also leaving and Assembly Republican Dave Craig of Big Bend is the only filer, joining four unopposed incumbents – Democrats Fred Risser of Madison and Robert Wirch of Kenosha, and Republicans Alberta Darling of River Hills and Duey Strobel of Saukville.
Assembly races in southwest Wisconsin will all be contested in November, with one August primary planned. That will come in the 50th Assembly District where Democrats Art Shrader of Reedsburg and Tom Crofton of Richland Center will square off for the right to face incumbent Republican Ed Brooks of Reedsburg in November. Two other Democrats had expressed official interest in the race, but didn't file the necessary papers by yesterday's (Wed) deadline.
The area's other races are 2-person contests in November. In the 49th Assembly District, incumbent Republican Travis Tranel faces Democrat Jesse Bennett of Bagley. Republican Todd Novak of Dodgeville is the incumbent in the 51st District. He will face Democrat Jeff Wright of Plain in the General Election. Westby's Lee Nerison, the Republican incumbent in the 96th Assembly District will face Democrat Alicia Leinberger of Viroqua in November.
County District Attorney candidates also needed to file with the state by yesterday's deadline. There will be just one contested D.A. race in southwest Wisconsin. That will be in Crawford County, where incumbent DA Timothy Baxter will face Mark Gillitzer in the November election.
