Rocking the Garage on Those Were the Days

January 3, 2024 10:17 AM CDT

The new year is here! The songs that we know, and love are another year older, and we stay the same age when we hear them on Saturday night.  I want to thank everyone for being part of Triviathon 2023 last weekend.  It was a real blast to combine two of my favorite passions (trivia and music). Congratulations to the winning team Party of 10. I appreciate the Solid Gold Dancers as they helped answer the phone.  Simo, Jo Ann, Adam, Beau, and Ken Thiede all gave up their wild party nights to help with the trivia game.

Regular features will resume Saturday night when we start a new year of old tunes on Those Were the Days. You can request a song from the fifties through the early nineties.  Garage Rock of the 1960’s has long been a favorite genre of mine. It has been a blast to collect the music on vinyl and cd. During this weeks’ show, I will dig out a few distortion classics that were pressed between 1963 and 1969. Some of my favorites include: Louie Louie-Kingsmen, 96 Tears-? and the Mysterians, At the Rivers Edge-New Colony Six, Dirty Water-Standells, Little Girl-Syndicate of Sound, Psychotic Reaction-Count Five, Question of Temperance-Balloon Farm, Gloria-Shadows of Knight, Keep on Dancing-Gentrys, I Fought the Law-Bobby Fuller Four, and Nobody but Me-Human Beinz. Many were bar bands that happened to catch lightening in a bottle. While some felt the music sounded like four tom cats with their tails caught in a screen door, others appreciated the energy and the fun.  These songs were very influential even though many came from one hit wonder groups. I hope you will tune in FM 100.9, wrco.com, or download the free Civic Media app so that you can join Those Were the Days between six and midnight. Maybe you will be the winner of a great trivia prize. So- it’s a date?  I’ll pick you up at six Saturday night!
